Start with requirements you can demonstrate
Tailoring means making relevant experience easier to find. It does not mean adding every phrase from an advert. Read the responsibilities first, then distinguish required skills from preferred skills. Save the job description because the listing may change or disappear.
Build a requirement-to-evidence checklist
Suppose a fictional analytics job asks for SQL, data validation and stakeholder reporting. Write down one piece of evidence beside each requirement:
- SQL: a project using joins and grouped calculations, including how you verified totals.
- Validation: checks for missing identifiers and duplicate records.
- Reporting: a dashboard or explanation that helped someone interpret the result.
Mark gaps explicitly in your private notes. A preferred tool you have not used may be a learning opportunity, but it should not become a fabricated resume skill.
Rewrite the relevant bullet
Before: Helped the team with reports and data.
After: Prepared weekly sales reports using SQL, checked missing customer IDs and reconciled revenue totals before sharing the dashboard with the operations team.
The second version explains the method, quality check and audience. It is only appropriate if those actions are true. If your example came from coursework, name that context rather than implying employment.
Change the order before changing everything
- Move the most relevant project or responsibility higher within its section.
- Adjust the summary to the role you are applying for.
- Use recognisable terminology for skills you actually possess.
- Trim unrelated details when they obscure stronger evidence.
- Keep factual details, employer names and employment dates consistent.
Do not hide keyword blocks in white text or paste the job description into your resume. A keyword comparison is a review aid, not an employer's actual screening algorithm or a promise of an interview.
Review the exported version
Open your PDF or DOCX and check headings, line breaks and links. Try selecting and copying text to identify obvious reading-order problems, while recognising this does not prove compatibility with every recruitment system. Follow the application portal's requested format.
Keep a record of what you sent
Save a clearly named version for each role and record the document name with the company, application date and original listing. When a recruiter calls, you should be able to retrieve exactly what they received. Read our application tracker workflow to organise that history, or start editing with the resume builder.
